We just held our 2018 Fall Board Meeting of WVACo at the Blennerhassett Hotel in Parkersburg - Wood County. What a great event and great time. Thank you to the Wood County Officials for all their help in putting it together, especially Circuit Clerk and Board Member Carole Jones. She was so excited to host our meeting and made it that much more special. She made sure we all had "good-y bags" of welcome. Thank you, Carole! It was great to be welcomed by all of you, and joined by Assessor David Nohe.
Thank you to Wood County Sheriff Steve Stephens, our newest Board member who jumped right in offering smart, helpful insights on both Sheriffs' issues and overall agenda items for WVACo's upcoming legislative session.
A special thanks and deep admiration to Commission President Blair Couch. Blair was recently ill but now on the strong road to recovery. He was our keynote speaker and gave an overview of last year's devastating industrial fire along Camden Avenue. During that crisis he showed why he ran for office and why people vote for office holders: leadership - solving problems so the rest of us don't have to worry when a crisis happens. Commissioner Couch provided that leadership and related how public officials should all respond in those moments. A job well done, Commissioner Couch!
The big news from our meeting is that all county officials/offices agreed to offering a bill this coming session that allows for county officials' pay raises to fall under the authority of respective County Commissions. Currently, raises that happen for county officials must be approved by the Legislature. It is our hope that passage of this bill will allow for more regular, dependable raises for officials and not having to wait sometimes 8, 10 & 12 years between raises from the legislature. EVERYONE came together! It was inspiring.
WVACo President Jan Pest made this issue her top priority for her term, and we are on the path to meet that goal. Congratulations to each and every office, their WVACo Board representatives for approving this plan. We're "building bridges together!"
