Director's Message

WELCOME to the West Virginia Association of Counties.  We are fifty-five reasons why West Virginia is such a wonderful place to live and work, raise our families, and glory in the natural beauty of our hills and valleys.

This association provides the tools to assist our elected county officials in making county government work for the benefit of our citizens, promoting the good works from public service, and finding solutions to make West Virginia grow and prosper.  Our primary function is coordinating the legislative relations between the counties and the State, influencing legislation at the state capitol in Charleston that affects county government operations and their programs that impact the people.

We offer professional training for our members through association meetings, and from affiliated groups like the Community Leadership Academy of the West Virginia University Extension Service, the National Association of Counties’ – NACO – Community Leadership Institute, and our “Prep School” for newly-elected county officials.

Jonathan Adler
Executive Director

As Executive Director, it is my plan to continue our success for many years to come, and expand our reach: to help grow jobs and economic development; increase tourism; and assist counties in preparing for and recovering from natural disaster.  A lifelong West Virginian born and raised in Lewis County, I, like many of my peers, want West Virginia to thrive in a changing world.  WVACO’s mission has always worked toward that end.

We hope this website is a useful tool for you:  a valuable resource for information about West Virginia and our historic county governments.  We are fifty-five strong.
