Middlebourne is the county seat of Tyler County.

Tyler County, established in 1814, is named in honor of John Tyler, who served as the eight Governor of Virginia from 1808 until 1811. His son, also John, became the tenth president of the United States. The senior Tyler was an eminent early American jurist who was one of the first judges to maintain the overruling power of the judiciary. He served as a judge of the Virginia general court from 1789 until 1808.

"Big Moses," the world's greatest gas well, was drilled here in 1894. Tyler County is located in the northwestern part of the state and is some 260 square miles in area. "Big Moses" produced as much as 100 million cubic feet of gas per day. The county's economy is supported by oil and natural gas wells, livestock, dairy, tobacco, and grain farms.
