he government offices for Putnam County are in Winfield, which is the trading center for the county's commerce and industry. Putnam County is in western West Virginia in an area where bituminous coal is mined. There also is natural gas, oil, livestock and fruit farms, and tobacco crops. Putnam County, in the western part of the state, was established in 1848 and named in honor of General Israel Putnam of Revolutionary War fame. Putnam had served with a distinguished record in the French and Indian War and in Pontiac's War (1764). Returning home to Massachusetts,m he then became active in pre-Revolutionary agitation. He volunteered after the Battle of Lexington and held a number of commands throughout the war. The first Civil War battle of any significance in the Kanawha Valley was fought at Scary Creek on July 17, 1861. Putnam County has a land area of some 351 square miles. |
