Lewisburg is a trading center in the rolling bluegrass country known as the Big Levels, and is the government headquarters for Greenbrier County. THe city has preserved the restrained air of a gentle and leisure-filled southern village reminiscent of the Old South. It is near White Sulphur Springs and was named for Andrew Lewis, who in 1751 was surveying for the Greenbrier Land Co. Lewis, who later became a general, was ordered in 1755 to erect Fort Savannah to protect the settlers in the Big Levels. The fort was destroyed during the French and Indian War. In 1774, Gen. Lewis mustered 1,000 militiamen for Fort Union as it was named after being rebuilt. Gen. Lewis and his men marched against the Indians, culminating their action in the Battle of Point Pleasant. Lewisburg, which was officially incorporated in 1782, is located on the Seneca Trail. The Presbyterian Church was the first church, being established in 1783. THe Masonic Lodge was chartered in 17906, and Lewisburg Academy was begun in 1810. Greenbrier County is in southeast West Virginia, partly on the Allegheny Plateau. It is a resort region, with mineral springs and is partly located in the Monongahela National Forest. The county has coal mines, lumber operations, livestock, dairy products, and fruit and tobacco farms. Greenbrier County was established in 1778. Greenbrier County is named fo the principal river that drains this part of the state. White Sulphur Springs has served as a well known health spa since 1778, when the county was created. This large county consists of more than a thousand square miles (1023). Old Stone Church at Lewisburg is still in use ... it was the first Presbyterian Church built west of the Allegheny Mountains.
