County governments play a critical role in the governmental structure by providing services directly to the American people. But this important role does not guarantee that people know what counties do.
NACo is working with county officials, the state associations of counties and other groups to raise awareness and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of counties. National County Government Month is an annual program that seeks to raise awareness. Other initiatives are being developed to increase understanding and highlight the successful programs that counties carry out.

On November 10, 2011, the West Virginia Supreme Court filed its decision in the case styled County
Commission of Greenbrier County, West Virginia v. Honorable John L Cummings and James W. Childers, Sheriff of Greenbrier County, West Virginia
The Greenbrier County Commission reduced the budget of the Sheriff of Greenbrier county for the fiscal year 2011-2012. The Sheriff challenged the budget reduction in court. The trial court found that the County Commission acted arbitrarily and capriciously in reducing the Sheriff's Budget and directed the Commission to do the following:

The 18th annual West Virginia Economic Outlook Conference was held in November, sponsored by the WVU College of Business and Economics. This forum attracts a large audience interested in hearing what the experts say about the forecast for the national and state economy.
This year, Associate Director George Hammond of the WVU Bureau of Business and Economic Research gave his annual “comfort food index” of the economy, saying that WV is going towards the ice cream end of the spectrum but keep a good stiff drink handy!
