Commisioner


The county commission is the governing body of a county, made up of three commissioners (except Jefferson County which has five). Commissioners serve a term of six years and it is a part-time position with salaries ranging from $19,800 - $36,960. The county commissions' powers must be expressly conferred by the Constitution or by acts of the Legislature. Their responsibilities include the administration of the internal police and fiscal affairs of their counties.

County Clerk

The county clerk is elected for a six year term and is a full-time position in Class I-V counties. Salaries range from $42,240 to $55,440. Their primary responsibilities center on two basic functions:

    Other duties include the issuance of marriage licenses and birth and death certificates, serving as Chief Voter Registration Official for the county, and keeping records of all County Commission transactions as well as  Chief Voter Registration Official and the Chief Election Officer for the county

Circuit Clerk

    The Clerk of the Circuit Court is elected in each county to carry out administrative functions and to act as record-keeper for circuit court actions in that county. They serve a six-year term that is full-time in Class I-V counties with salaries ranging from  $42,240 to $55,440. The Circuit Clerk is an officer within the judicial system and plays a pivotal role in that system. They are responsible for the issuance of writs and final process orders, the administration and management of the petit and grand jury systems in the county, and overseeing matters related to jurors.

Assessor

    Assessors are elected for a four year term that is full-time in all but Class X counties. Their base salary range is $38,280 - $44,880 with additional fixed compensation of $6,500-$15,500 for duties specified in state law. Assessors annually appraise or place a true and actual value on all real and personal property for tax purposes and from that determine the assessed value for the calculation of taxes. They are responsible for listing all property in the county, both real estate and personal property. They also list properties which are exempt from taxation, determine eligibility for the Homestead Exemption and maintain tax maps and property records.

Sheriff

    The Sheriff of the county serves as its chief law enforcement officer, charged with the responsibility of policing the county and keeping the peace, including the power to make arrests. Their term of office is four years and they may not serve more than two consecutive terms. It is required to be a full-time position in all counties except Class X with a base salary range from $38,280 - $44,480 and additional compensation for tax collections not to exceed $15,000. The Sherriff's duties include serving and executing all returns, notices, and processes issued by the courts, acting as bailiff in court proceedings, administering transportation of prisoners, and collecting all state, county, municipal, and school taxes.

Prosecuting Attorney

    The Prosecuting Attorney is the chief legal officer of the county. Prosecuting ATtorneys are elected to server four year terms that are full-time in Class I-V counties. The salary range is $46,200 - $96,600. In criminal cases, they assist in the investigation of all crimes and other law violations in the county. In civil cases, the prosecuting attorney acts as legal advisor to the County Commission and oother county officials. Their responsibilities include the prosecuting of all crimes, both misdemeanors and felonies, within the county, requesting warrants to be issued for persons charged with felonies, and trying cases before magistrate and circuit judges.
